Service overview

What playrooms involves and who it is for

What playrooms is

Playroom joinery is storage and play furniture designed for children: low-level toy storage children can reach, bench seating, shelving, reading nooks, craft tables and built-in play features. Everything is made in our Stratford-upon-Avon workshop with rounded detailing, secure wall fixings and wipe-clean finishes.

Who it is for

It suits families converting a spare room, dining room or garage into a playroom, and commercial operators, cafés, soft play, nurseries, clinics and family venues, who need a play area that survives heavy public use. Our team built the children's playroom at Hooray's Gelato Kitchen.

When it is needed

Usually when toys have taken over the living room, when a room changes use as children grow, or when a business is fitting out a family-friendly space. Designing early means fixings, power and any sensory or lighting features can be planned before decoration.

Why professional joinery matters

Children's furniture has to meet two standards that adult furniture does not: it must be safe to fall against, and it must survive being climbed on. Both come down to construction, edge detailing and how the units are fixed to the structure, decisions made in the workshop, not on the shop floor.

The cost of getting it wrong

What happens when this is left too long

A playroom that is not designed for children stops being used within months, and the toys move back into the rooms you wanted to reclaim.

Risks and escalating costs

  • Toys spread back into living and dining rooms because storage is out of reach.
  • Tall, unfixed furniture is a tipping hazard around climbing children.
  • Sharp corners and hard edges at head height cause avoidable injuries.
  • Absorbent finishes stain permanently from paint, felt tips and drinks.
  • In commercial settings, furniture that fails inspection or wears out fast costs far more than it saved.

Common mistakes we are called in to fix

  • Buying adult shelving and expecting children to keep it tidy, if they cannot reach it, they will not use it.
  • Storing toys in deep boxes where everything ends up emptied on the floor to find one item.
  • Leaving units freestanding rather than fixing them to the wall.
  • Choosing a delicate finish for a room designed around craft, food and mess.
  • Designing for the age children are now rather than the age they will be in three years.

Our process

Five stages from first visit to finished joinery

  1. Step 1

    Free consultation and survey

We measure the room and discuss ages, use, supervision sightlines and what needs storing.

  2. Step 2

    Design and itemised quotation

Layout, heights, edge detailing and finishes agreed before pricing. Quotations are free and itemised.

  3. Step 3

    Workshop manufacture

Units are made with rounded, child-safe detailing and hard-wearing finishes in our own workshop.

  4. Step 4

    Installation and secure fixing

Everything is installed and mechanically fixed to the structure, with any lighting wired by our in-house electrician.

  5. Step 5

    Check and hand over

Fixings checked, edges inspected, the space cleaned and handed over ready to use.

What you get

The difference made-to-measure joinery actually delivers

Children can tidy up

Low, open, labelled storage at child height is what makes tidying possible without an adult.

Safe by construction

Rounded edges, no trap points and units mechanically fixed to the wall.

Survives real use

Robust materials chosen for climbing, banging and daily wear.

Wipe-clean throughout

Finishes that cope with paint, glue, felt tips and spilled drinks.

Grows with the room

Adjustable shelving and flexible zones so the space still works as children get older.

Commercial-grade when needed

Public-facing spaces built to a commercial standard, as at Hooray's Gelato Kitchen.

  • Soft edges and secured, wall-fixed units
  • Toy storage children can actually reach and use
  • Wipe-clean, hard-wearing finishes
  • Commercial-grade build where the space is public-facing

Common questions

Answers before you enquire

How much does bespoke playroom joinery cost?

It is priced individually after a survey, depending on the size of the room, the storage and any built-in play features. The consultation and quotation are free.

Is the joinery safe for young children?

Units are built with rounded, child-safe detailing and are mechanically fixed to the wall rather than left freestanding.

Do you build commercial play areas?

Yes. Our team built the children's playroom at Hooray's Gelato Kitchen, delivered to the same standard as our domestic work.

What finishes work best in a playroom?

Wipe-clean, hard-wearing finishes that survive repeated cleaning, craft materials and spills. We specify these at design stage.

Will the room still work as the children get older?

We use adjustable shelving and flexible zoning so the storage can be reconfigured rather than replaced.

Is your team DBS checked?

Yes, every member of our team of five is DBS checked, which matters for both family homes and commercial family venues.

What deposit do you take?

30–50% depending on the size of the project, with the balance due on completion.

Which areas do you cover?

Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick, Leamington Spa, Solihull, Evesham, Banbury, Worcester, Cheltenham and Bromsgrove.

We couldn't be happier with the work MJS did building the children's playroom at Hooray's Gelato Kitchen. This was the first time they'd taken on a project like this, and you honestly would never know it.
