What bespoke furniture is
Bespoke furniture is freestanding work made to a brief: dining tables, sideboards, consoles, desks, bookcases, benches, beds and display pieces. You choose the dimensions, the timber, the finish and the detailing, and we draw it, agree it and make it once: properly, by hand, in our own workshop.
Who it is for
It suits people who have measured a space and found nothing on the market fits it, who want a specific timber or finish, who need a piece to seat a particular number of people, or who want furniture they can take with them when they move rather than joinery fixed to the house.
When it is needed
Usually when a room is being finished and the last piece cannot be bought: a table for an awkward dining space, a sideboard for a wall with a radiator in the wrong place, a desk for a specific window. Clients often arrive with a photograph, a sketch, or just a maximum dimension.
Why professional joinery matters
Mass-produced furniture is designed to average dimensions and built to a price. A maker who draws and builds the same piece can hold a tolerance, choose boards for their grain, and construct joints that survive decades of use rather than a warranty period.
The cost of getting it wrong
What happens when this
is left too long
Buying the nearest available piece instead of the right one is the most expensive way to furnish a room, because it usually happens twice.
Risks and escalating costs
- A table that is 200mm too long turns a usable dining room into a squeeze around the chairs.
- Veneered particleboard furniture chips at the edges and cannot be repaired or refinished.
- Proportions that fight the room make an expensive space feel awkward without anyone being able to say why.
- Buying twice costs more than commissioning once, and the first piece is rarely worth reselling.
- Long retail lead times on imported furniture can be as long as a commission, with none of the control.
Common mistakes we are called in to fix
- Measuring the space but not the route into it, a finished piece has to get through the door.
- Choosing a timber by name without seeing how it behaves under the room's actual light.
- Ordering a table by seat count rather than by the clearance needed to pull a chair out.
- Specifying a solid top with no allowance for seasonal movement, which is how tops split.
- Treating finish as an afterthought when it determines how the piece survives daily use.

Five stages from first visit

Step 1
Brief and free consultation
We talk through the piece, the room and the use, and take the dimensions that matter, including access.
Step 2
Design and itemised quotation
You see the design, the timber and the detailing before you commit. Quotations are free and priced individually.
Step 3
Material selection and making
Boards are selected for grain and colour, then the piece is machined, jointed and assembled by hand in our workshop.
Step 4
Finishing
Hand-applied oil, wax, lacquer or paint, built up in coats and cured before the piece leaves the workshop.
Step 5
Delivery and placing
We deliver and position the piece ourselves, check it in place and hand over care instructions.

Materials, methods and variations
Clients often come to us with a sketch, a photograph or simply a measurement that nothing on the market fits. We turn that into a drawn design, agree it with you, and make it once, properly.
Design consultations and quotations are free. There is no fixed price list, every project is priced individually because every project is made to measure. A deposit of 30–50% is taken depending on the size of the work.

Common questions
Answers before you enquire
How much does a bespoke piece of furniture cost?
Each commission is priced individually after we understand the size, timber, construction and finish. There is no price list, and the quotation is free.
How long does a commission take?
It depends on the piece and our workshop schedule. We give you realistic dates with the quotation rather than an optimistic figure at first contact.
Can you work from my sketch or a photograph?
Yes. Most commissions start that way. We turn it into a drawn design, agree it with you, and only then start making.
Which timbers can I choose from?
We regularly work in oak, ash and walnut in solid and veneered form, and we build painted pieces in MDF and solid timber. We will talk through what suits the use and the room.
Will the piece fit through my door?
We check access at survey. Where a finished piece cannot be brought in whole, we design it to be assembled in the room without that showing in the finished work.
What deposit is required?
30–50% depending on the size of the commission, with the balance due on completion.
Can you repair or refinish the piece in future?
Yes, building in solid timber with repairable construction is precisely what makes that possible.
Do you deliver outside Stratford-upon-Avon?
Yes. We deliver and place pieces across Warwick, Leamington Spa, Solihull, Evesham, Banbury, Worcester, Cheltenham and Bromsgrove.
